REJOICE WITH THE CHURCH AT FILIASI
The Gift Day funds, raised by Knowle Church for the church at Filiasi, have enabled them to buy a plot of land on which to build their new church building. The negotiations with the owner of the land have been prolonged, but after much prayer and persistence, they are now able to celebrate. Pastor George and all the members of the church send their grateful thanks to the many brothers and sisters who have made this possible.
This is the first step in this project. Please pray that they will obtain planning permission from the authorities without any delay. Further funding will be required for this and also to buy the materials for the base and to connect the services they will need. When all these are in place application can be made, to the American Baptist Union, for a prefabricated building. This organization is offering four units per year, free of charge, to Romanian Baptist Churches.

FAMILY HOME FOR TEENAGERS
Since making it's application to join the E.E.C Romania is trying to improve the child-care system in order to raise standards. At the age of 16, options are few and many young people end up on the streets.
A new project began, in 2001, near to Craiova. The House of Love was opened. This is a residential home for young people, who may have been in institutions all of their lives. The youngsters can stay here for one year, during which time they are able to experience being in a family style environment, with various responsibilities they will not have had in the larger homes. This will include domestic duties, as well as growing vegetables for the “family” and looking after cows, pigs and hens. A nurse/carer from the primary childrens home in Craiova and her husband are the house-parents, with a cook and general helper.
At present there are five boys sharing a room and five girls in the other, which is rather cramped, with little personal space. However when visitors from Scotland arrived, just a few days before Easter they were all working happily in the garden and waiting for the delivery of a cow and a pig for their small farm
It is hoped that eventually, all the young residents at The House of Love will be able to have some experience of work, to improve the possibilities for their future lives. One boy was working at a local garage and one with a gardener.
Report from Ann Snodin, Scotland.

IMPROVEMENTS IN CANCER DETECTION FOR WOMEN
Romania has a high rate of cervical cancer and women usually consult the doctor with advanced cancer, which makes their treatment more difficult and survival less likely. This has a devastating effect on a woman's life and her family. It also represents a huge drain on the Romanian health care system.
In the UK there is a cervical screening programme, “the smear test”, which will detect the early signs of cervical cancer. If the screening is positive, the ladies are referred to a clinic where a colposcopist may diagnose and treat early changes, which could develop to be cancer. This treatment will prevent the majority of cervical cancer in the long run. Since the introduction of screening in this country, the death rate from cervical cancer has been dramatically reduced and is now relatively rare.
In the UK every colposcopist has to undergo supervised training which is governed and controlled by the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology(BSCCP). which is also a member of the European Federation for Colposcopy (EFC). Romania did not have such a society or access to any training.
CARE appealed to Mr. Joe Jordan, well-known Consultant Gynaecologist, for help. A trainer for many years in colposcopy at Birmingham Women's Hospital and President of E.F.C and also an advisor to the World Health Organisation programme for the prevention of cervical cancer world-wide.
CARE was able to sponsor the formation of the Romanian Society through one of our links in Romania, Dr Nicu Cernea. * We were also able to sponsor two of the members of the new society to attend the European Conference in Greece, where they were accepted as members of the E.F.C. thus giving them access to training and expertise.
In the future this can bring enormous benefits to women's health, their families and all of society.
Dr.Sabah Baghdadi
*Professor of Gynaecology Maria Cernea (mother of Nicu) was also the first Chairperson of C.A.R.E (Romania).
FURTHER - WIDER - DEEPER
After twelve years of working in and for Romania. C.A.R.E is now working on a Five Year Project Plan ( 2001- 2006). All the needs in the plan have been identified in Romania and confirmed by a research visit.
Spreading the gospel of Christ in a practical and prayerful manner, we aim to help and encourage Romanian people to help each other.
Supporting the churches that we work with by joining them in Evangelistic Missions and helping to develop projects that will enable their witness in the community and provide financial support for the pastor and the church.
The churches that we support are also working within their own communities supporting the areas of special concern to C.A.R.E, such as the Psychiatric hospital at Poiana Mare.
Pastor Daniel and a team of helpers from Calafat visit every other week. They take food to share with the patients and have a time of praise and worship with them. These times are enjoyed by everyone.
Pastor Teofil has plans to rebuild the Baptist Church in Craiova as a Church Centre, with a much larger building. This will enable it to become a training center that can be used during the week to train Pastors and provide space on Sundays for children's groups. Also rooms for a crèche, a doctor, a dentist and other community needs.
